The Girl Who Dreamed Only Geese, and Other Tales of the Far North
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Young Classics (September, 1997)
Average review score:

Brains and BeautyAside from the wonderfully told stories, this book is an exceptional example of bookmaking, from the white on white end pages to the frieze-like illustrations by the Dillons that tell the story along the top of the page. A great choice for a gift book.

God Bless the Child (Howard University Press Library of Contemporary Literature Series)
Published in Paperback by Howard Univ Pr (December, 1987)

A Teenhood Favorite of MineThis has to be one of my all-time favorite books. I first read it when I was 12, so of course I didn't quite understand all of it. Anyway, I read the book to tatters. I reordered it recently (from Amazon, of course!) and have enjoyed it again and again since receiving it.
The book perfectly captures the pain, neediness, and anger of a girl from the ghetto and her subsequent struggle to overcome her childhood. I would recommend it to anyone of any age that wants a good, solid read.
I have also read The Soul Brothers and Sister Lou, a young adult book by Ms. Hunter-Lattany. It, too, is excellent. I just wish she'd write more books!

God's Plagiarist: Being an Account of the Fabulous Industry and Irregular Commerce of the Abbe Migne
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (April, 1994)
Average review score:

The Unknown History behind your Patrologia Graeca!I came upon this book a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. As an armchair reader of Patristic texts I often use some of Minge's works. I was delighted by the story behind the publishing of these and so many other books in such a short amount of time. Using rather questionable business practices, Minge put out both the Patrologia Latina and the Patrologia Graeca (almost 400 vols). Moreover, he published ten newspapers and over 1000 volumes in just 30 years.
I am not sure that the end justifies the means, but Minge's odd and entertaining saga is a good tale, esp is you are interestind in patristics.
You may also find A Tactful God interesting if you have an interest in liturgical studies. It is the story of Gregory Dom Dix, the litrugical scholar who published the massive Shape of the LIturgy. Enjoy!

God's Revolution: Justice, Community, and the Coming Kingdom
Published in Paperback by Plough Publishing House (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Powerful SelectionsFifty years after his death members of the Bruderhof communities (which he founded) chose those excerpts of Arnold's talks and writings, which they felt, were the most moving and relevant to them personally. This selection became the manuscript for God's Revolution, which Plough later published. Orbis Press has also just come out with another fine book entitled Eberhard Arnold / Writings Selected that readers of this book should look at. It is part of their Spiritual Masters series.

Gold Seeker, Adventures of a Belgian Argonaut During the Gold Rush Years: Adventures of the Belgian Argonaut During the Gold Rush Years
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (December, 1998)

Great Great Grandpa did us proudExcellent review of my Great Great Grandfather's 20 years in America after leaving first Belgium and then Paris to seek his fortune with a company that upon arrival in Monterey, California was bankrupt. Being a self starter and not one to give up easily; he headed off to the gold fields on his own gathering other people as he went along. He gives an excellent account of the hardships and heartache suffered by not only himself but others who found themselves so far from home. It was either charge forward or give up and go to wherever it was you could afford to travel. It shows his compassion for his fellow man and also his ability to get along with the Indians and adapt to whatever the world threw at him You have to be proud of a guy like that. Eventually he married a cousin and brought her to the U.S. to live in Portland, Oregon but eventually they returned to Belgium where he whiled away his last years enjoying life and most probably thinking about the wonderful and exiting years of taking each day as it came; solving lifes problems and standing up for what he believed in; occasionally backing that up with his pistol and rifle. This is not a shoot em up story or anything of the sort; however, it does reflect what it was like to be on your own in a very difficult environment and time when only the strongest survived. Naturally, I am biased since the old fellow blazed a trail for the rest of us Perlot's----of which there are but a few.

The Good Kid Book: How to Solve the 16 Most Common Behavior Problems
Published in Paperback by Research Press (August, 1988)
Average review score:

The best I've seen.I've never written a review before, but I am compelled to do so for this book. As a clinical psychologist who occasionally works with kids, I found this book a few years ago and have used it with many parents. I must say this is simply the best self-help book available on the topic of handling child behavior problems. The programs outlined in the book are derived from behavioral research and thoroughly explained. Following the programs is a lot of work, but if followed consistently you will have great results. Thanks to the author for an excellent resource.

Gospel Trailblazer: An African American Preacher's Historic Journey Across Racial Lines
Published in Hardcover by Moody Publishers (May, 2003)
Average review score:

Great Book!!!I was really encouaged and challenged by Gospel Trailblazer. It tells the life story of Howard O. Jones, who has been described as the "Jackie Robinson of evangelism." The book is incredibly well-written, and the anecdotes and stories reveal the real face of America -- warts and all -- during the 1930's through 1960's, before civil rights were given to African Americans. I highly recommend this book.
